Mamelodi Sundowns have proven to be a constant thorn in Kaizer Chiefs‘ side, and this weekend’s match offers the chance to extend that dominance to a whopping 12 matches without defeat.
Indeed, this will be the third meeting of Amakhosi and Masandawana, with the Tshwane giants winning on both occasions.
Ahead of the fixture, SBN looks at three attackers who could find the back of the net at Lucas Moripe Stadium when these two giants collide.
Lucas Ribeiro Costa
Having joined Sundowns from Belgian club SK Beveren, Ribeiro arrived in South Africa as a relatively unknown player. Many questioned whether he would adapt to the Premier Soccer League (PSL), but his footballing background suggested otherwise.
Developed in the youth systems of Brazilian club Pinheiros and Valenciennes in France, Ribeiro had already spent four years in Belgium, representing clubs such as R Charleroi SC, Waasland-Beveren, Mouscron, RWDM, and RE Virton. His ability to adjust quickly became evident as he made an immediate impact in his first season with Sundowns.
This season, Ribeiro has been outstanding, scoring 11 goals across his 17 league matches. He is the favourite to win the PSL Golden Boot, with his teammate Iqraam Rayners trailing him on nine goals.
Peter Shalulile
Mamelodi Sundowns secured a convincing 4-2 victory over the surprise package of the season, Sekhukhune United, during their midweek appointment.
Whilst he did not register a goal involvement, Peter Shalulile was an ever present threat, occupying the strikers berth. He kept the Sekhukhune backline busy and I expect more of the same from him when he squares off against Kaizer Chiefs.
During his previous three starts against Kaizer Chiefs across all competitions, Shalulile has three goals and registered an assist. Should he start this upcoming clash, Sha-Sha may very drop a match winning performance.
Tashreeq Morris
A subplot to watch will be the return of Kaizer Chiefs striker Tashreeq Morris to Lucas Moripe Stadium.
Morris made the move from SuperSport United to Chiefs in January and had previously spent a short stint with Matsatsantsa, making 11 appearances and scoring two goals at the stadium.
One of his goals came against Chiefs, and now, in his first match back at Lucas Moripe as an opponent, Morris will be hoping to make it a memorable return.
