Bafana Bafana: Phuti Mohafe Backs Polokwane City star to Rival Mudau for Bafana Bafana Role

Polokwane City head coach Phuti Mohafe has thrown his support behind defender Thabang Matuludi, expressing confidence that the player can challenge Khuliso Mudau for a spot in the national team.

After spending much of last season sidelined by a long-term injury, Matuludi has returned to action with standout performances that have caught the attention of Bafana Bafana selectors.

His resurgence has earned him a call-up to Hugo Broos’ squad for South Africa’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers—first against Zimbabwe at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday, followed by a clash with Rwanda at Mbombela Stadium next Tuesday.

Mohafe believes Matuludi’s form and determination make him a serious contender for a regular place in the national setup.

Mudau, meanwhile, also rejoins the national setup after missing the September qualifiers against Lesotho and Nigeria due to personal matters with Mamelodi Sundowns.

The former Black Leopards defender had been in contract negotiations with Sundowns following the expiration of his deal in June, but both parties have resolved the situation, clearing the way for his full focus on the national team.

“I think Mudau is three or four years older than Matuludi, and he’s a strong competitor,” Mohafe told Sportswire.

“I believe Matuludi will give him a real run for his money. I’ve always maintained that Matuludi is the second-best right-back in the country – and I won’t mention who’s first because everyone knows. He’s truly one of the best this country has ever produced.”

Mohafe added that Matuludi is ready to challenge for a starting role under Broos, especially with the Africa Cup of Nations finals in December approaching.

“He’s ready to compete for that position, and he’s doing so already. I wouldn’t be surprised if he becomes the number one right-back in the upcoming matches. If he gets a chance, I’m confident he’ll make that spot his own,” he added.

Bafana Bafana will kick off their crucial tie against Zimbabwe later this evening. Kick off is set for 18h00 in Durban.
