Bafana Bafana: Lucas Radebe Endorses Bafana Bafana successor

South African football legend Lucas Radebe has voiced his full support for Helman Mkhalele to take over from Hugo Broos as Bafana Bafana’s national team coach.

With Broos already confirming his exit after the global showpiece in North America, uncertainty remains over who will take charge of South Africa’s senior men’s team. But for Radebe, the answer is already within the current technical team.

Mkhalele has served as Broos’ trusted assistant throughout the Belgian’s tenure — a period that has seen Bafana qualify for back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and secure a place at the upcoming World Cup.

Radebe believes that the experience gained during this time makes Mkhalele the ideal candidate to lead the team into a new era.

Speaking to iDiski Times, the former Kaizer Chiefs and Leeds United captain said Mkhalele’s development under Broos and his understanding of South African players set him apart.

“You know, over the years, we’ve been saying we need our own coaches,” Radebe told the publication.

“It’s about learning from people like Hugo Broos — people who have coached big nations and competed at the highest level. And Helman has done exactly that.”

Radebe emphasised that Mkhalele’s journey under Broos has equipped him with the tools to succeed, provided the country’s football structures support him.

“For me, I think yes — possibly Helman has learnt from a great coach who has done absolute wonders for this country,” he said.

“I don’t see why not. As a former player who has been there and done that, he understands the demands, he understands the players, and he plays a massive role in ensuring they work together and know what it takes to win matches.”

With Broos’ tenure nearing its end, Radebe joins a growing chorus advocating for a South African coach to lead Bafana into the future — and in his view, Mkhalele is ready.
