Hugo Broos has addressed the exclusion of in-form Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Mduduzi Shabalala from the final 23-man Bafana Bafana Squad.

South Africa is set to take on Zambia in a friendly match as part of their preparations for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco this December. The match is scheduled to take place at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday, 15 November.

Shabalala scored a brace on Tuesday and provided two assists during Amakhosi’s 4-1 thrashing of Orbit College in the Betway Premiership match, where Broos was in attendance.

He was part of the last Bafana camp and got some minutes in the match against Rwanda, where they sealed their spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Broos clarified the reasons behind sidelining the 21-year-old, citing that it’s purely based on using the opportunity to give a chance to other players like Orlando Pirates’ Masindi Nemtajela and Keletso Makgalwa of Sekhukhune United, who received their first national team call-ups.

“No, that’s what I said already, this is the moment that we can try and introduce some other players, and [Masindi] Nemtajela is making very good performances at Pirates. So I think I uh had to
call him and see how he’s behaving himself on training and in the group, and that’s why Shabalala is not there,” said Broos to the media.

“It’s not a question of whether he’s not playing good or I don’t want him anymore. But again, it’s the last game I do such things and that’s the only reason that I just wanted to see Nemtajela in the team and how he is behaving, if he has already the level of Bafana Bafana,” he concluded.

Nemtajela will look to further impress the Belgian coach when Orlando Pirates face Richards Bay in the Carling Knockout Cup semifinal on Saturday, 8 November.
