Atletico Madrid’s ongoing battle with fan violence took another turn this week as UEFA handed the club a hefty €30,000 fine.
This punishment comes in the wake of disturbing incidents involving members of the Frente Atletico, a notorious group of radical supporters, during the recent Champions League match against Benfica in Lisbon.
While over 2,000 fans travelled to support their team at the Estadio da Luz, a small minority engaged in unacceptable behaviour, including Nazi salutes.
The majority of Atletico fans conducted themselves admirably, but it was the actions of the radical element in the south stand that drew UEFA’s ire.
As a consequence of previous infractions, that section of the stadium will be closed for three matches.
UEFA is taking a firm stance on these matters, imposing swift sanctions to deter further misconduct. Atletico Madrid’s officials are concerned that if similar incidents occur again in the next year, the club will face even stricter penalties, including a potential ban on selling tickets for UEFA matches.
This would severely affect travelling supporters who passionately support Diego Simeone’s team.
Club representatives have expressed disappointment over the situation, highlighting their commitment to promoting a safe and respectful environment for all fans.
“We urge our supporters to stand against violence and uphold the values of football,” said a club spokesperson, emphasising the importance of unity and respect among fans.
