Marumo Gallants’ Alexandre Lafitte believes his side has what it takes to pull off another upset when they face Orlando Pirates in the Carling Knockout final.

Gallants booked their spot in the final after a thrilling 2-2 draw and subsequent 4-2 penalty shootout win over Golden Arrows at King Zwelithini Stadium on Sunday. The result capped an impressive cup run for Lafitte’s men, who have already eliminated heavyweights Mamelodi Sundowns and Stellenbosch earlier in the competition.

Having already beaten Pirates in the Betway Premiership this season, Lafitte is quietly confident his team can complete a memorable double over the Buccaneers.

“I think I have a team, and all the players are ready and focused on the same objective. That’s why I’m confident against Pirates, but we still have work to do,” Lafitte said after the match.

“We won our last game against Pirates at home, and before the final, we still have a few league games to prepare. We’ll aim to collect at least five points before then. When you reach a final, you want to win it, and we’ll be ready.”

The 28-year-old French tactician was also full of praise for veteran goalkeeper Washington Arubi, who once again proved decisive by saving two penalties to send Gallants through. The Zimbabwean shot-stopper had also starred in their last-16 victory over Sundowns, also decided by penalties.

“Honestly, Arubi is special. He can even take penalties himself. When you have someone like him in goal, you know he’ll step up in crucial moments. I trust him completely,” Lafitte added.

The Gallants coach also hailed his team’s fighting spirit and mentality after twice taking the lead before being pegged back by Arrows.

“It was a difficult game, but I’m very happy with the result. The team showed fantastic character and a strong mindset to push until the end. We played exciting football and could have won it in regulation time, but the focus and resilience to win on penalties made me proud.”

With a place in the final now secured, Lafitte and his charges will turn their attention to preparation, determined to write another fairytale chapter in the club’s remarkable cup journey.
