Abdeslam Ouaddou explains bold call to substitute Patrick Maswanganyi in the first-half

Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has explained his daring decision to substitute Patrick Maswanganyi just 36 minutes into Saturday’s MTN8 semifinal.

He admitted the star midfielder was simply “not having a good day.”

The change, made at Lucas Moripe Stadium, proved decisive. Bandile Shandu was introduced at right back, allowing Kamogelo Sebelebele to push higher up the pitch, while Relebohile Mofokeng took over the playmaker role from Maswanganyi. Oswin Appollis shifted to the left flank, creating balance in attack.

The tactical switch paid dividends. Appollis delivered a dangerous cross that was brilliantly controlled by Tshegofatso Mabasa before Sebelebele pounced to score from close range. The goal cancelled out Iqraam Rayners’ earlier strike and leveled the aggregate score at 2-2.

Sebelebele, who had also netted in the first leg, once again showed his value in an advanced role.

Despite the early withdrawal, Ouaddou defended Maswanganyi, stressing his importance to the team.

“Patrick is one of our best players. He has been doing well for a long time, and I believe in him. Sometimes, it’s just not a player’s day – it doesn’t mean he’s bad,” he said.

The semifinal ultimately went to penalties, where Pirates triumphed 4-1 to book their place in the final against Stellenbosch on 13 September. The venue is yet to be confirmed by the PSL.

Victory would secure the Soweto giants a record fourth consecutive MTN8 crown, underlining their dominance in the competition.
