Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou admits he will miss the talents of departing centre-back Mbekezeli Mbokazi but he doesn’t begrudge the player his move.
The 20-year-old defender has enjoyed a rapid rise in his career and has now sealed a deal to join Major League Soccer side Chicago Fire when the Africa Cup of Nations concludes in January.
Ouaddou explained he will work to find a replacement for Mbokazi while continuing to develop the other players they have in their squad.
“We’re going to miss him of course because he is a fantastic player,” explained the Bucs boss.
“I don’t think there would be a coach who wouldn’t want to have him. But on the other hand, the evolution of the player, I cannot be selfish because I was in his position when I was 23 years old.
“My ambition was to play in the Premier League, and I had an opportunity to play for Fulham. I have to understand as a coach.
“So, I have to work with what I have, trust the players, work with them to improve them. We are coaches, unfortunately our job is to improve the players we have to give them the chance.
“Of course, I like my game model to have a left-footer [defender] on left side in terms of the balance of the team in that position.
“It’s up to me to find solution to try replace him.”
In the absence of Mbokazi and captain Nkosinathi Sibisi for their Carling Black Label Cup win against All-Stars last Saturday, Ouaddou opted for a change in system as he started with three centre-backs, namely Olisa Ndah, Lebone Seema and Thabiso Sesane.
“On the [new] system, we wanted to surprise them by going with three at the back. Even if they realised it, it came as a shock because they didn’t have enough time to prepare,” Ouaddou revealed.
“Having said that, I might change the shape in the second half of the season and go with three at the back. It gives me confidence for the future.”
