The defending champions of the Betway Premiership, Mamelodi Sundowns, will kick off their 2025/26 campaign with a demanding fixture list that sees them playing three of their five matches away from home in August.
Their season opener is scheduled for Saturday, 9 August, as they face Chippa United at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha — a team they have impressively never suffered a league defeat against.

This early run could pose a serious test for Sundowns as they seek to retain their crown in South Africa’s top-flight football competition.

The defending league champions begin their 2025/26 Betway Premiership campaign in Gqeberha against Chippa United on Saturday, a team they have never lost to in a league match.
Masandawana will then host AmaZulu in Tshwane before travelling to face Magesi in Polokwane, the team that memorably defeated the Chloorkop based club in last season’s Carling Knockout Cup final.
A huge clash follows against Kaizer Chiefs, with Sundowns looking to extend their winning streak over the Soweto giants to seven league matches.
Ka Bo Yellow end the month of August with a tough test in the Western Cape against Steve Barker’s hard running Stellenbosch team.
Coach Miguel Cardoso’s side will be looking to dominate the league once again, with the coach opting for quality instead of quantity in his squad.
Sundowns have only signed Bafana Bafana left-back Fawaaz Basadien from Stellenbosch, whilst Sipho Mbule, Lebo Maboe and Kobamelo Kodisang are among six players who have left the team.
“The intention is still to reduce the numbers (of the squad),” said the Portuguese head coach.
“We will do it together (with Sporting Director and board). The squad will be smaller than last season for sure. We can’t have players who are never used.”
“But no one should think that Mamelodi Sundowns will ever be, not in the level that has to be. And for sure, people in charge will take the responsibility to organise the things and solve the issues in proper time.”
