Mamelodi Sundowns coach Manqoba Mngqithi is excited by the prospect of facing new teams following the announcement of the African Super League.

Confederation of African Football president Patrice Motsepe recently confirmed the league, which will begin in 2023 with a whopping $100m (about R1.6bn) prize money for the winner.

The details of who the participants are or what the format of the competition will be have yet to be announced. However, it will be by far the most lucrative competition ever hosted by the confederation - far exceeding the total prize money of $12.5m (about R204m) for the the CAF Champions League, where the winner comes away with $2.5m (about R41m).

And reflecting on the lucrative new competition, Mngqithi said on Soccer Laduma: "To be honest, we are so excited about the new tournament.

"It is always great to match ourselves with other teams in the continent.

"So Super Cup presents that opportunity to see ourselves against other teams and whether we are in a good position to compete at that level."
