Maritzburg sack Middendorp

Maritzburg United have confirmed the sacking of Ernst Middendorp as head coach.
It brings to an end a fourth stint in charge of Maritzburg for the 63-year-old German tactician. Middendorp arrived for his fourth spell in November 2020 and led the Team of Choice to a 13th-placed finish in 2020-2021 and a 12th-placed finish in the recently concluded season.

On both occasions the KZN outfit came perilously close to being relegated, something which chairman Farook Kadodia says cannot continue considering the amount of money being invested in the club.

"I can confirm we have parted ways with the coach," Maritzburg chairperson Farook Kadodia told TimesLIVE on Wednesday morning.

"We will be making a full statement on it soon. But what I can tell you is that main reason is that the reality we cannot keep fighting relegation.

"We have invested a lot in football development overall but especially in the last two years. We supported the coach fully and the board felt that by investing so much money every year we cannot be continuously fighting relegation."

According to reports, Fadlu Davids could reunite with brother Maahier at the helm of Maritzburg. Maahier was assistant to Middendorp, while Fadlu has recently parted ways with Pirates, having been co-coach with Mandla Ncikazi at the Soweto giants.

Fadlu impressed in his last stint as Maritzburg head coach, taking the side all the way to the Nedbank Cup final where they lost out to Free State Stars and also to four points away from CAF Confederation Cup football on the league standings.
