Comitis: No City clear-out

Cape Town City Commercial Director Michel Comitis says the DStv Premiership side are not planning a mass clear-out of players.

While both Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates have released large numbers of players, alongside making player signings as they prepare for the upcoming season, City have a more settled squad.

The Citizens finished second in the recently completed season, behind runaway Champions Mamelodi Sundowns, to secure their place in the CAF Champions League.

Speaking to iDiski Times, Comitis said: "I think it's a bad time when you see 15 players released from a club, but at least it shows some intention.

"I think a lot of clubs are starting to realise that football is not a part-time profession, that there's players in this country that aren't prepared to do what's needed to compete at the highest level, then there's no point in carrying passengers.

"And I think that's why you see a lot of players without work at the moment.

"I can definitely confirm that there's not going to be 15 players leaving Cape Town City, but I think that’s a sign of just where we’re at the moment. Some clubs really need to change things and others need to keep consistent in terms of what they’re doing."

Only bit-part players Bongani Mpandle and Shane Roberts have so far left the Cape-based side.

They also recently tied defender Keanu Cupido and midfielder Mpho Makola to new deals with the club.
