Cape Town City extend Makola stay

Midfielder Mpho Makola has extended his stay at Cape Town City FC after signing a new contract with the Mother City outfit.

City have exercised the option to renew Makola's contract for another year.

The 36-year-old joined from Orlando Pirates three years ago and his time in Cape Town has been a controversial one.

In the 2020/2021 season, he was banned for six months for pushing referee Abongile Tom in a Telkom Knockout quarterfinal tie with Kaizer Chiefs and in the 2021/2022 season was banned for two months for manhandling match official Gladwin Baloyi in an MTN8 quarterfinal clash with Mamelodi Sundowns.

However, despite his age and poor discipline, the Citizens have decided to extend his stay as they compete in CAF Champions League football next season. Makola, when he has been available, has been a key cog in the midfield and shown his prowess from dead-ball situations.

"Mpho Makola has signed a new contract at the club. Bibo extends his stay until June 2023. Integral figure in the City Camp!" the Citizens confirmed on the club's official Twitter account.
