Lebohang Maboe out for nine months

Mamelodi Sundowns attacker Lebohang Maboe

Mamelodi Sundowns attacker Lebohang Maboe has been ruled out of action for up to nine months, the club have confirmed.

The 26-year-old former Maritzburg winger underwent knee surgery last month after injuring his knee at the start of the current DStv Premiership campaign.

Maboe has suffered a tear in his anterior cruciate ligament as well as an associated lateral meniscus injury.

Dr. Carl Tabane confirmed the news in a report on Kick Off: "Lebo sustained quite a complex knee injury at the beginning of August. He's currently four weeks post-injury and exactly 11 days post-surgery. He injured his lateral meniscus and his anterior cruciate ligament.

"It's obviously quite complex and it needed surgery and the surgery was successful. We are looking at a rehabilitation process of around six to nine months.

"This is not the first time we're dealing with such injuries and with the medical team that we have, we are quite confident that we might shorten it and he might come back a little bit earlier, but we are looking at about six to nine months.

"These are the types of injuries which could spell, for some players, a career-threatening injury, but he is a highly motivated individual and we actually started the rehab before the surgery and he was quite keen to do that."
