McCarthy: We need another striker

AmaZulu coaching staff

Benni McCarthy says he'll look to sign a new striker after a seeing his side struggle in front of goal in their opening three games of the season.

AmaZulu have been doing their best to deal with a number of absentees through injury as well as a few reported Covid cases.

They kicked off their campaign with a 2-1 loss to Cape Town City in the MTN8 quarter-finals before a 1-0 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns.

Usuthu were then held to a goalless draw with Swallows at home on Wednesday night, leaving McCarthy a frustrated figure on the touchline.

Speaking after the game, the AmaZulu boss told SuperSport: "From here, we can go back and use the international break to work on a lot of things and hopefully try and get another striker in because it's one of my biggest frustrations in the team.

"Most teams have players that, when you get one or two chances, you take them, but we seem to want three, four chances before we take one, so I think if we can get another striker who's hungry to score goals, who wants to score goals [we will improve]."

McCarthy added: "You know, against Sundowns, they got one chance, the penalty they scored, and we got probably the easiest chance of the game and we didn't score and then you lose the game.

"It's becoming frustrating from a team point of view that you do well, that you need to work exceptionally hard to create three, four, five chances to win games, whereas other teams sometimes just need one chance to win a game."
