Khune: We have a great goalkeeping department

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune

Itumeleng Khune was delighted to be handed a new contract at Kaizer Chiefs ahead of the upcoming 2021/22 DStv Premiership season.

The Amakhosi club captain and long-time Bafana shot-stopper has struggled for form in recent seasons but remains an integral member of the squad and was rewarded with a new two-year deal.

Khune has pushed teammates Daniel Akpeyi and Bruce Bvuma to fight for the number one jersey at the club and is expected to continue to play an important leadership role at the club in the coming campaign.

First up for the club is the annual pre-season Carling Black Label Cup against rivals Orlando Pirates where Khune will captain his side.

Speaking ahead of Sunday's game, the 34-year-old said: "I'm really grateful for another opportunity that I've been given by the club.

"We have a great goalkeeping department and a great goalkeeping coach (Rainer Dinkelacker), and he has made it clear to us that we are all No. 1's and that we have to fight for the No. 1 spot.

"We've always had a healthy competition and no one is guaranteed a starting berth, so we are all going to earn our place in the team, we are all going to support one another if we are not playing, because we are not only doing it for our own benefit but for the club's benefit.

"So, we are going to help the club achieve the goals that we have set for ourselves. I'm very grateful for the new contract but I don't know whether it will be my last, it will depend on what I still have to give on the pitch."
