Portugal vs Germany Preview

Cristiano Ronaldo and Manuel Neuer will captain Portugal and Germany in the pick of Saturday's action

Group F produces yet another humdinger clash when Portugal lock horns with Germany in the city of Munich.

Portugal kick-started their defence of the tournament with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Hungary, while Germany failed to register their first point on the board after losing 1-0 to France.

With qualification in sight, Portugal know that a win over the Germans would see them book a spot in the Last 16.

Portugal

Portugal will be hoping to book their ticket to the next round of the competition when they square off with Germany on Saturday evening. The defending Euro and Nations League champions start the day off in top spot of Group F after what seems like a battering against Hungary, where they won 3-0.

By no means was that a 3-0 game, with Portugal needing a bit of luck to break the deadlock, while it was also a case of Fernando Santos’ men winning the game off the bench, combined with having the greatest goalscorer on the planet up front.

Cristiano Ronaldo broke yet another goalscoring record last time out and now leads as the all-time leading goalscorer in European Championship history. Ronaldo will definitely have another golden boot in his sights, and with the attacking quality that Portugal have, its hard to bet against him getting it.

Portugal also have the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Diogo Jota and Bernardo Silva in attack, who have been given the license to roam in the final third by Danilo Pereira and William Carvalho, who were immense against Hungary.

Germany

Things didn’t go according to plan for Germany, who had to surrender to defeat against France in their Euro 2020 opener. More unfortunate for the Germans was that the goal conceded came from one of their own players in Mats Hummels who blasted the ball into the roof of his own net accidentally.

Despite losing just 1-0 to France, it was a game that offered very little positive signs for the Germans, who looked shaky at the back, spineless in the middle and lacked creativity up front. It will be interesting to see if Joachim Low makes any changes coming into this game, or whether he feels like the players chosen in the first game have what it takes of getting the job done against this Portugal side.

The one selection headache that Low will have is whether or not to bring Leon Goretzka in the team now, who is fit and available after missing the first encounter due to injury. Another Bayern Munich star who is fit and ready for selection is the teenage midfield prodigy, Jamal Musiala.

Time will tell whether the Bayern Munich duo can make a difference for Germany, or whether they can bring out the best in the players around them.

Prediction: Portugal Win/Draw (11/20)
Although I do fancy Portugal quite confidently in this tie, their price on offer allows us to be a bit more cautious and still have a decent price for the multiples. The Portuguese’s weaknesses have yet to be exposed in the competition, which makes them a true concern for Germany. If you were to chase a bit of value in this fixture, Cristiano Ronaldo as an Anytime Goalscorer is priced up at a valuable 29/20.
