Mapeza's resignation will come as a shock as he only took over the hot seat at teh Chilli Boys in September last year and guided the side to 11th place on the PSL standings after a poor start to the season.

A former Zimbabwe international, Mapeza was in charge of Chippa for 19 games in all competitions and has a record of 8 wins, 8 defeats (including one on penalties) and 3 draws.

Mapeza's last game in charge was on Saturday when he steered the Eastern Cape side to a vital 1-0 victory over Amazulu.

According to reports, Mapeza and club bosses were locked in a lengthy meeting on Monday night with the coach then tendering his resignation.

The club have yet to release an official statement but Sambu told the Daily Dispatch publication: "Yes I have been asked to take over the coaching duties until a new coach is found."

Chippa's next game is a league clash against Bidvest Wits away from home on Saturday.
